Paul Klas, MD

Program Director

Paul Klas

Paul was born and raised in Wisconsin, receiving his medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine. Later on grooming in family medicine at the University of Virginia, Paul fulfilled a NHSC commitment in rural Due north Carolina. After completing this, he went back into academic family medicine at the University of Virginia Medical Middle. Missing straight patient intendance, Paul joined a full spectrum private practice family medicine clinic for 15 years in Charlottesville, Virginia, caring for a generation of families.

Subsequently moving to La Crosse to care for aging parents, he became Chairman of Family Medicine at Gundersen Wellness Arrangement. Sensing this was a great setting for a strong family medicine section, with the help of the Medical Didactics Office, Paul began the process of developing a family unit medicine residency. In preparation of overseeing this residency, Paul completed a fellowship for program directors.

Paul has spent a great deal of time participating in international medical work with over twenty trips to Haiti and x trips to rural Nicaragua. He also volunteers at the local health mission for uninsured patients.

Paul loves the outdoors including h2o skiing on the Mississippi River, hiking, running, snowfall shoeing and spending time with his lovely married woman Karen and their grandchild. He is agile in a faith community focusing on customs evolution and justice.

Libby Abbas, Practice

Libby Abbas, DO

Dr. Elizabeth "Libby" Abbas is a lath-certified Family Medicine md practicing in Decorah, Iowa. She received her medical caste and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine Pre-Doctoral Fellowship at Des Moines Academy College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency at Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta, Maine.

Dr. Abbas practices the full spectrum of rural family unit medicine, including outpatient medicine, inpatient hospital care, obstetrics, addiction medicine, integrative medicine and osteopathic manual medicine. She serves as the Osteopathic site manager and a community preceptor, bringing along her positive attitude and excitement for osteopathy and teaching.

She enjoys riding her mountain bike, playing music (especially harmonica) with her husband Nick, practicing and teaching yoga and experiencing outdoor adventures of whatsoever kind with her two Dobermans, Izzy and Nelly.

Heidi Allred, Doc

Heidi Allred, MD

Dr. Allred is a board-certified Family Medicine physician with interests in Women's health, pediatrics, and lactation/breastfeeding medicine. She attended medical school at the University of MN – Twin Cities from 2009 to 2013 and did her residency training at the University of California - San Diego from 2013 to 2016. When non at work, she enjoys spending time outside with her married man and ii picayune girls.

Robyn Borge, MD

Robyn Borge

Dr. Borge is a graduate of the University of N Dakota Medical School. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at the La Crosse-Mayo Family unit Medicine Residency Program in La Crosse, WI.

Dr. Borge has special interest in pediatrics, women's health, quality and practice management. She has helped direct the Main Care Innovations group, which promotes continuous improvement in patient intendance and office efficiencies.

She and her husband have two children. She enjoys spending fourth dimension with family and friends, playing volleyball and rollerblading.

Wes Fox, Doc

Wes Fox, MD

Dr. Wes Fob was raised in Pittsville, Wis. He graduated from the Academy of Wisconsin-Madison after studying conservation biology and business concern. He so went to medical school at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and the Wisconsin University for Rural Medicine, graduating with a Distinction in Public Wellness. He completed Gundersen's Family Medicine Residency as a member of the inaugural class. His varied medical interests include preventive medicine, healthcare policy, doc wellness and innovations in primary intendance delivery. Dr Trick'due south research and quality initiatives take resulted in presentations for the Obesity Medicine Association in September 2017 and the USC Keck School of Medicine'south Innovations in Medical Education Conference in February 2020. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Wisconsin Academy of Family Physicians.

In his complimentary fourth dimension, Dr. Fox and his wife like to spend their time visiting national parks, lounging on their favorite beach or traveling to new places. He enjoys Wisconsin pastimes like hunting, fishing, camping, and eating at Fri fish fries.

Brandi Strong, Md

Brandi Strong

Dr. Strong is a graduate of Memorial Academy of Newfoundland Schoolhouse of Medicine. She completed her residency at the Idaho State University Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Strong has interests in full-spectrum rural family medicine: OB, procedures and outpatient dispensary.

In her spare fourth dimension she enjoys quilting, working towards her black belt in karate (a brown belt currently), mountain biking and spending time with her hubby and two boys.

Catherine Schuman, PhD

Catherine Schuman

Catherine Schuman, Ph.D. is the Managing director of Behavioral Scientific discipline Didactics for the Family unit Medicine Residency Program and the Director of Integrated Care for Gundersen Health System. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology with an emphasis in health from the California School of Professional Psychology, San Diego and specialized in behavioral medicine during her fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She was previously the Director of Behavioral Medicine and Behavioral Medicine Training at Cambridge Health Alliance (CHA) and Banana Professor of Psychology in the Department of Psychiatry and Sleep Medicine, Harvard Medical Schoolhouse (HMS) and the Director of Sleep Psychology the University of Vermont College of Medicine and Fletcher Allen Health Intendance where she was a Clinical Acquaintance Professor in the departments of Neurology and Psychiatry.

Dr. Schuman provides collaborative, collocated and integrated patient intendance and trains others to practise the same through her role equally the Managing director of Behavioral Science Education for the Family Medicine Residency Program and the Director of Integrated Treat Gundersen Health System. Dr. Schuman was an appointed member of the American Psychological Association, Inter-Organizational Work Group on Competencies for Psychological Do in Primary Care. The work group developed a document that articulates the competencies key to primary care psychology.

Dr. Schuman has published a volume, several book capacity and peer reviewed articles about the integration of slumber management into clinical do and the integration of behavioral health in primary care, the human relationship between stress, concrete disease, and psychological well-being and impact of health disparities. She co-edited the volume, Clinical Handbook of Insomnia, second edition. Most recently she published the article, Integrating Sleep Management in to Clinical Practice in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings. She is likewise the President of the Association of Psychologist in Academic Health Centers.

Dr. Schuman is a beekeeper and has a love of all things outdoors especially gardening.

Kenneth S. Yew, MD

Kenneth S. Yew, MD

Dr. Yew is a graduate of the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. He completed his residency in Family unit Medicine at the Naval Hospital Jacksonville Family Medicine Residency Program in Jacksonville, Fla. Dr. Yew has completed a faculty evolution fellowship at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and a master's degree in Public Health from the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD.

Dr. Yew has special interest in maternity care, sports medicine, obesity prevention, nutrition and lifelong doctor leaning. His interest in health disparities has led to his participation in Gundersen Health Organization's initiatives around social determinants of health and agin childhood experiences.

He and his wife have six children. He enjoys spending time with family, cross country and downhill skiing, biking, hiking, tennis, line-fishing, reading and humanitarian missions and travel.

Paula is a native of La Crosse, WI. She has worked for Gundersen Wellness System for more than eleven years, of which 10 years have been in the Medical Education Part analogous the 3rd and 4th year medical student rotations. She is very excited to be moving into the part of the Family Medicine Residency Coordinator and has been working alongside Dr. Paul Klas to develop an outstanding residency. Paula is looking forward to developing lasting relationships with residents and assisting them with their journey through residency.

In her spare fourth dimension she enjoys spending time with her family, canoeing, gardening, boating on the Mississippi and exploring the many trivial getaway places in Wisconsin.

Community Preceptor Team

Our residency has half-dozen customs faculty who are Gundersen employed family unit physicians who precept regularly in the FM Residency Clinic. This is a mixture of rural physicians, DO physicians who have expertise in OMT and sports medicine fellowship trained physicians. They all have a passion for teaching and are well respected for their clinical care. The residents bask having this breadth of experience to heighten their family medicine feel.
